As a young boy, I wanted to play football. Although that was my desire, I did not start off being the best at it. It took years of dedication, hard work, and figuring out the process. I studied my craft, honed my skills, and made every sacrifice necessary to become the best. Not only did I play football, I became football. One thing was for sure . . . I was going to play in the National Football League. I dreamed of it.
I longed for it. I planned for it. I was obsessed with it, and I was willing to submit myself to the process in order to get there. While in my process, I endured disappointments, suffered injuries and was faced with a myriad of other obstacles I had to overcome. Despite all that, God allowed my dream to come true! As a young football player, I fell in love with the sport of football. But, more interestingly, I fell in love with the process of becoming elite.
"I realized that if I could become elite in football, I could transfer those same skills to life and become elite in everything I put my mind to."
As a young man, I realized that one of the greatest gifts of playing football was the skills acquired to become an elite athlete. I realized that if I could become elite in football, I could transfer those same skills to life and become elite in everything I put my mind to. “Elite” suggests a level of competency and performance that few people reach. The process of becoming an elite athlete stretched me, pressed me, and shaped the very man I am today.
I believe that becoming elite is merely a process, and that process involves discipline, vision, and sacrifice. Whether you are a lover of sports, a college student, or an entrepreneur, the road to success requires these same traits.
Often people possess BIG dreams, but they are only willing to give a small effort. That is not how success works. We cannot give a half-hearted effort and expect a whole result. Obtaining success, SUSTAINABLE success, requires stamina, foresight, and the ability to stay committed to a process NO MATTER THE COST. Consistency costs, but it is so worth it!
"Often people possess BIG dreams, but they are only willing to give a small effort. "
These three attributes will catapult your success:
Discipline – Sticking to a course of action until the desired result is achieved.
Vision – Possessing a clear picture of where you want to go.
Sacrifice – Committing to give up something today to achieve your dreams.
As I now coach collegiate football, I teach these life lessons to my players. Last year, I formalized my teaching into a workbook entitled, “Discipline, Vision & Sacrifice”. My players were so receptive to the workbook and we saw such great results that I decided to make this workbook available for coaches and players.
Discipline, Vision & Sacrifice helps players clarify their vision, get clear on what discipline looks like, and understand the sacrifice it takes to become the student-athlete and person, they want to be. The workbook also aids communication between coaches and players, and empowers players to express themselves and seek guidance from their coach in a supportive environment.
